ePub is a format for electronic books. It allows you to scale type, search text, and bookmark. It also supports links in text, and depending on your device or software will support other features. Recently (23rd May, 2011) a new ePub 3.0 specification was released that now supports both video and sound in your publication although iOS devices (Apple) support ePub 3.0 it might be a while before other readers catch-up.
Almost all ebook readers on the market today will display ePub files. This includes devices such as the Barnes & Noble Nook, Apple iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch along with devices powered by the Android OS and other ebook readers for smartphones. Unfortunately, the Kindle and the Sony Librie do not display ePub files natively, but they do display PDF files. However ePub can be converted to these other formats using a plug-in or utility.
Please see the manufacturer’s directions for your specific device or software. As an example, on iOS devices (Apple) you can purchase books through the Book Store and on the Kindle from their website or via WhisperNet.
You can use the Firefox ePub Reader add-on, or download ebook software for your computer such as Adobe Digital Editions. Kindle now has a Mac and Windows Kindle app and Calibre is a good free desktop ebook reader, and Stanza is a good free ebook reader for iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad as well as the built-in Apple viewer - so lots of choice
